Black tea is famous for its deep, rich flavor that many people love. One particular type, called Earl Grey, is without doubt the favorite. This particular tea was named after the first Earl Grey who was a British General in the American Revolution, although his son, the second Earl Grey was also prominent as a British Whig Statesmen and Prime Minister. Grey’s work with tea during the 19th century forever changed the tea industry.
Who Was Earl Grey?
The first Earl Grey was a British General in the American Revolution and his son, the second Earl Grey was a British Whig Statesmen and Prime Minister. The first Grey was a commander that led his men in war, fighting and winning numerous battles, his greatest being against American forces commanded by General Anthony Wayne, at what was to be called the Battle of Germantown.
Earl Grey came from a Northumbrian family and had excellent education from Eton and Trinity College. At the age of 22, he was elected to the Parliament, followed by becoming a part of the Whig movement. Soon after, he was elected as one of the primary leaders, which was expected because of his respected position in Britain. However, advocating for Parliamentary reform, as well as Catholic emancipation was to become his legend.
Then during the 18th century, the Whig party began to change, supporting aristocratic families, and non-Anglicans. In addition, opposing Tories were showing support for the gentry and Anglican Church. Eventually, the Whig party was provided with support from various industrial venues and wealthy merchants while at the same time the British Crown and landed interest supported the Tories.
Political Movement of the Whig Party
In the first half of the 19th century, the Whig political program consisted of parliament supremacy over the monarch along with free trade support. In addition, this party strong denounced slavery, wanting it abolished and pushed for franchise opportunities to be expanded. Working hard, the Whig party eventually became the Liberal Party and on the other side of the coin, the Conservative Party belonged to the Tories.
Then by 1830, power was returned to the Whigs, a time when Earl Grey was Prime Minister. He was seen as a noble man who pushed the Reform Act of 1832 through. With that, the House of Commons reform and abolishment of slavery occurred in 1833 throughout the country. While Earl Grey had always been liberal, he eventually became more conventional. Even so, the more radical reforms he stayed away from and in 1834, he finally retired.
The Gift of Earl Grey Tea
The wonderful loose black tea known as Earl Grey was said to be a gift. While no one is sure from whom, historians believe it was probably from a diplomat. Other people say the gift to Earl was from a Chinese Mandarin who had a son that had been rescued by one of Grey’s from drowning. This particular tea is flavored with Bergamot Oil, which gives it a unique, rich flavor. Originally, this herbal tea was made by blending Ceylonese from Sri Lanka and black Indian tea that has been fermented.
In China, green tea is far more popular than black tea but today, several different recipes have been developed for their representation of Earl Grey tea so they can make it for requests. Although Earl Grey has never been to China, he would likely be honored by the various Chinese black tea recipes used.
Now, another version of how Earl Grey was given the tea is that an Indian raja had a son who was rescued by one of Grey’s faithful servants. Grateful for this selfless act, he bestowed Grey with this rich, delicious healthy tea.
While the taste is not for everyone, Earl Grey tea has grown significantly over the years, now being a favorite by many for its distinct flavor. As more and more people fell in love with this black tea, marketing efforts increased. As a result, the British Government provided assistance in the form of tax reductions as a part of the fair trade agreement, making this fair trade tea.
